Paper Bag Sizes, Gussets and Handles
Specify a paper bag with labeled width, height and base or side-gusset dimensions. Check the complete contents, not only one item. The handles, material and bag construction must suit the intended load; a size label does not confirm carrying capacity.
Measure the packed contents
- Arrange the products as the customer will carry them, including containers and accessories.
- Measure the widest footprint and the total height.
- Note whether rigid containers, sharp corners or moisture affect the use.
- Show the bag orientation on a sketch with units.
- Describe the load and handle preference for review.
Three dimensions to label
| Dimension | What it helps describe |
|---|---|
| Width | The front opening and face used for artwork |
| Height | The bag body; clarify whether handles are included in the measurement |
| Gusset or base depth | The expanded space needed by the packed footprint |
An illustrative carryout example
If two food containers are stacked, the bottom container determines the footprint while both containers contribute to the height and load. Add the drinks or accessories that must travel in the same bag before choosing a format. No universal clearance or load rating follows from this example.
Compare handles and use
Share the preferred handle style and whether the bag is used for retail purchases, takeaway containers or another load. Ask for the actual handle attachment and material specification rather than assuming that a larger bag can carry more weight.
A shopping bag is not automatically a parcel mailer. For shipping, compare poly mailers and shipping boxes. For carryout, explore paper bags and retail bags. Include your sketch, quantity and ZIP code in a quote request.
A practical fit check for a takeaway order
Arrange the complete order as it will be carried: containers, any cup carrier, napkins and other inserts. Measure that arrangement rather than a single empty container. Check whether the bag opening allows loading without tilting containers, whether the base sits flat and whether the handles leave a comfortable grip when filled.
Which measurement includes the handles?
There is no safe assumption to make from a product name. Record the bag body height separately from any handle rise and ask how the supplier measures its finished format. A photograph with marked width, body height, base depth and handle position makes the request clearer. Suitability for the packed weight needs confirmation.
Measure the largest intended carryout arrangement
| Order | Measure | Review separately |
|---|---|---|
| Bakery pickup | Primary loaf packs arranged as handed over | Primary bread contact and bag carrying load |
| Coffee cart | Filled drinks in their intended carrying arrangement | Cup closure and handling |
| Food or pizza accessories | Finished containers, liners and additional packs | Container suitability and overall load |
Include the opening path and any space needed to reach handles. A nominal flat width or external dimension does not necessarily describe the usable base. Ask for the dimension convention and a reference drawing.
Keep the buying quantity connected to completed orders
If two primary packs share one carrying bag, count those primary packs per product and the bag per completed carrying arrangement. Use recorded use or a labeled scenario. For bakery requests, say explicitly whether you need a direct-contact bread bag or a carrying bag; these are not assumed to be the same catalogue reference.
