How to Specify Coffee Bags & Pouches
Specify a coffee pouch by describing the contents, packing process, dimensions, closure and protection requirements. A fill weight such as 12 oz is only one part of the request: it does not identify a physical bag size or material structure.
Start with the coffee and the process
State whole-bean or ground coffee, the intended fill and how it will be packed. Describe the filling equipment and storage conditions. Where a valve is needed, request it explicitly and have the supplier confirm its use with the proposed structure.
| Detail | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Contents and fill | Product description and intended weight or volume | Different contents occupy different space |
| Dimensions | Width, height and any gusset; identify the measurement convention | Usable capacity and display arrangement |
| Closure | Zipper, opening and production seal requirements | Consumer use and filling compatibility |
| Valve | Whether requested and details of the coffee packing process | A separate feature requiring confirmation |
| Material structure | Relevant oxygen, moisture and light protection needs | Appearance alone does not establish performance |
A zipper and a seal have different roles
A resealable zipper describes how the customer can reclose the pouch. The packing process may need a separate production seal. Confirm the material and equipment combination, along with the clear areas needed for sealing and opening, before approving a printed layout.
Choose how the package will be displayed
For upright presentation, evaluate the filled base of a stand-up pouch. For smaller portions or samples, compare flat pouches. Use coffee bags to focus the request on retail coffee and roast variants.
Test before making performance claims
Assess filling, closing, stability and handling with the actual contents. Ask for the proposed material structure and relevant documentation. A pouch photograph, a valve or a metallic appearance cannot establish a particular shelf life. Validate the full product, processing, seal and storage combination before making that claim.
Prepare roast variants clearly
List quantities for each roast and identify shared dimensions. Reserve an area for changing information such as batch or roast date, and explain how it will be marked. Brand assets can be shared, but every structural format needs its approved production layout.

Plan quantities alongside the specification
Estimate each consumable separately using orders, open days and actual units per order. The packaging consumption calculator helps you deduct stock and round purchases to supplier pack sizes. Use your own values; its examples do not establish production minimums or prices.
