A pizza-box fit specification starts with the largest finished pizza envelope and the usable closed interior. Request inside length, width and height explicitly, with units and the reference drawing.
Measure the food that will actually be packed
Measure after baking, in the intended packing condition. Record the widest crust in two directions, the highest topping and any separate support or liner. Irregular crust means the advertised pizza diameter may not describe every finished pizza.
| Field | Record | Do not substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Inside length | Usable length in the closed reference | Outside panel length |
| Inside width | Usable width across the finished base | Nominal pizza diameter alone |
| Inside height | Clearance under the closed lid | Blank height or unfolded side-panel size |
| Added components | Liner/support and intended placement | Assumed zero thickness |
Agree the dimension convention
Ask for a drawing identifying inside and outside measurements. A flat blank’s dimensions do not give the usable assembled interior. Board thickness, folds, locking areas and lid geometry can change where the pizza has clearance.
For illustration, a finished pizza envelope of 12.2 × 12.1 × 1.4 inches is a measurement to send for review. It is not a statement that a nominal 12-inch box fits, or that a particular clearance is sufficient. The sample resolves the final fit.
Check the closed sample
- Identify the sample reference and assemble it as instructed.
- Place the actual pizza and any liner in the intended position.
- Close the lid normally without forcing the crust or toppings.
- Inspect clearance at corners, locks and the lid.
- Repeat for expected product variation and record the outcome.
Keep a fit result separate from the service-performance test. A box that closes may still require evaluation of the normal pickup or delivery arrangement.
Approve the structure before final artwork
Use the approved structure and its print template for the production file. Confirm which panels are printable and any exclusions near folds or locks. A different internal height or closing design can change the dieline even if the product still carries the same nominal pizza size.
Send each size’s measurements, quantity and artwork run in a separate line. This prevents a supplier from having to infer whether the requested size is external, nominal or usable interior.
Questions about this decision
Should I add a fixed amount of clearance to every pizza?
No universal allowance is specified here. Review the actual pizza, closing geometry and proposed sample.
Can the dieline tell me the interior size?
It helps identify the structure, but use the reference’s stated assembled inside dimensions and confirm fit on the sample.
Does a fit check establish suitability for hot food?
No. Contact and service suitability require separate confirmation and evaluation for the proposed reference.
