Etsy Thank-You Card Messages: Notes for Handmade and Personalized Orders

Write a note for the person opening the parcel. Use truthful details for custom, gift and returning orders, with a useful route for post-purchase help.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Useful Etsy thank you card messages recognize the actual handmade order and the person opening it. For a personalized purchase, acknowledge the customer’s choices without exposing private details. For a direct-to-recipient gift, write to the recipient. For a repeat purchase, use returning-customer wording only when the order record supports it. Add a genuine help route where it is useful, and keep the printed message easy to read.

A maker’s note can do more than repeat “thanks for your order.” It can acknowledge a custom detail, explain where the care guidance is, or help a gift recipient know whom to contact.

Choose the context of the handmade order

Start with the reader. The person opening a gift may not be the person who selected or paid for it. A personalized order may carry a meaningful name or date, but that does not make every detail appropriate for a printed shop card.

Choose among three note versions: custom, gift and returning. Keep a neutral version available for orders whose context is unclear. Staff should be able to choose from confirmed order information rather than making assumptions from a name or delivery address.

Separate the shop note from the customer’s message

The customer’s approved gift wording belongs to its own workflow. Your shop card should not rewrite it or add information the sender did not ask to share. In a direct gift, avoid inserting purchase prices or treating the recipient as a returning buyer.

This guide focuses on context selection and useful post-purchase wording. For a broader choice of short greetings, use the 40-message library. Choose one purpose for the card before combining several sentences.

Write notes for custom, gift, and repeat purchases

The following messages are original starting points. Keep only statements that describe your own work, the confirmed order and the support you actually provide.

Original notes with a packing rule
Context Sample wording Use only when
Personalized design Thank you for sharing your idea with my shop. It was a pleasure to prepare this piece for you. The buyer helped define the piece and the statement is true.
Selected custom detail Your chosen details make this piece your own. Thank you for letting me bring them together. Customization was part of the actual order.
Gift recipient A handmade gift, chosen for you. I hope you enjoy opening it. The parcel is confirmed as a gift.
Gift with separate care card Enjoy your handmade gift. The care card inside explains how to look after this piece. A correct product-specific care card is included.
Returning customer Good to see you again. Thank you for choosing another piece from my shop. The order record confirms a repeat purchase.
Neutral context Thank you for choosing my shop. I hope you enjoy this piece. No more specific context is needed.

Add help without inventing a promise

A useful second line might be: “If you have a question about this piece, contact the shop through your Etsy order.” Confirm that the route works for the intended reader. A gift recipient may need a different, real support route approved by your shop.

For care information, direct readers to the correct included guide instead of guessing washing, storage or material advice. Keep product-specific instructions under their own review. Avoid putting customer names, private messages or sensitive customization details into a reusable print file.

Check platform rules before adding promotional requests

Review Etsy’s shilling policy and the current seller policies before adding feedback requests or promotions. The policy reviewed on October 6, 2026 prohibits biased or inauthentic reputation-building practices, including compensated biased positive reviews. It does not make every type of incentive interchangeable.

The examples here contain no reward for a review, request for a particular rating or active discount. That is a deliberate editorial choice, not a claim that every possible promotional sentence is forbidden. Keep appreciation separate from any campaign that requires its own current policy review.

Keep the note useful on its own

A customer should be able to enjoy the message without taking another action. If you add a help link, test the destination and keep its wording specific. Do not promise a replacement, response time or outcome that your actual shop process cannot support.

Fit the note to a printable card

Choose the main note first, then decide whether help information belongs on the reverse or on a separate care insert. Review the text at its actual finished size. Edit a crowded sentence before shrinking every line to accommodate it.

For a repeatable print system, use a fixed shop signature and space for a brief truthful handwritten detail. Mark print versions in your internal stock record and give staff a simple selection rule. Do not turn those internal version names into customer data on the front.

Prepare the selected version

The Canva card-layout guide helps arrange the message. Use the approved artwork instructions for final trim and production requirements. Explore thank-you cards and insert cards with the intended use, finished format, sides, versions and quantities.

Read a sample while opening the complete handmade parcel. Check that the right note reaches the right reader and that any care or help reference is actually present.
